Ghana’s embassy in the United States of America (USA) is set to reopen on Thursday, May 29, according to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday.

The Foreign Affairs Ministry confirms that a team of seasoned diplomats has been tasked to take charge of the affairs of the country’s mission to restore dignity to the embassy’s operations.

“The Ministry wishes to inform the general public that the embassy is set to reopen on Thursday, May 29, 2025. We assure that measures have been put in place to clear the backlog,” read the statement.

“Following the recall of home-based staff and suspension of local staff of the Embassy of Ghana in Washington, D.C., United States of America, a team of seasoned diplomats led by an astute diplomat from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been tasked to run the mission to ensure total systems overhaul, restore integrity in the embassy’s operations, and complete ongoing structural reforms,” it added.

The Foreign Affairs Ministry further emphasized that an Information Technology (IT) team has already been deployed to reconfigure the website and payment platforms to do away with all unofficial and unauthorized links associated with the IT system of the embassy.

The statement expressed the commitment of the ministry to enhancing service delivery to the public, safeguarding transparency and accountability, and protecting Ghana’s esteemed image in the comity of nations.

Ghanaian Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa on Monday announced the temporary closure of the Ghanaian embassy in Washington, D.C., for “restructuring and systems overhaul” after some alleged corrupt practices emerged.

Ablakwa announced the decision on X, formerly Twitter, saying that a special audit team found that a local staffer in the embassy’s IT department created an unauthorized link on the embassy’s website, which diverted visa and passport applicants to his company, where he charged extra for multiple services on the blind side of the ministry and kept the entire proceeds in his private account.

“The investigations reveal that he and his collaborators operated this illegal scheme for at least five years,” he said. Enditem
