Kumasi Asante Kotoko beat Division 1 side Golden Kick Sporting Club 2-1 late Sunday to lift the 2025 MTN FA Cup at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium at Legon, a suburb of the Ghanaian capital of Accra.
A double by the Porcupine’s marksman Kwame Opoku gave the Kumasi-based club all that they needed to lift the MTN FA Cup for the tenth time in the history of the club.
Having failed to win the Ghana Premier League (GPL), Kotoko went into the cup final determined to lift the trophy to appease their teeming supporters
The Porcupine Warriors began the game on a high note by pilling pressure on their opponents and their efforts were rewarded in the 16th minute when Kwame Opoku connected a Lord Amoah free kick from the right flanks with his head to open scoring for his side.
Kotoko were anxious to get the second but Golden Kicks lifted their game and in the 31st minute, Bless Age converted a well-taken free kick to score the equalizer. The Division 1 side dominated proceedings until the end of the first half.
Back from recess, Golden Kick SC continued their dominance in the early stages until Kotoko took over but were very wasteful upfront.
The score line remained same until in the dying embers of the game when the referee awarded a controversial penalty to Kotoko in the 95th minute in which Kwame Opoku converted expertly to score the final and winning goal for his side.
Apart from winning the 2025 MTN FA Cup, Kotoko has the ticket to represent Ghana in the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) Confederation Cup.
Kotoko’s manager Karim Zito observed that the match was a difficult one for his side but they were determined to win hence put in their all to ensure they achieved the victory.
“Coming into the game, Golden Kicks will not lose anything if they lost the match and so we were under so much pressure. It was a difficult match for Kotoko as I began the game with injuries. But at the end of the day, what matters most is that we won,” said Zito.
He assured the teeming Kotoko fans that they were going to prepare feverishly for Africa. Enditem
