A total of 10 tonnes of cannabis herbs, 30 kg of cannabis resin, 3 kg of cocaine, and 5 kg of crack were seized in Niger in 2024, while 7,788 individuals were arrested for drug-related offenses, Niger’s Minister of Justice Alio Douada announced Thursday in Niamey.
These figures demonstrate that “Niger, once considered a transit country, is becoming a country of high drug consumption,” the minister said in a message marking the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
Faced with this reality, it is important to act, prevent, and protect, he stressed, explaining that “the action to be taken will first involve investing in prevention, which constitutes our first line of defense, as it starts in our families, strengthens in our schools, and is cultivated in our neighborhoods.”
With the aim of improving the legal and institutional framework for combating drugs, a national coordination commission for fighting drugs was established on May 6, he said, emphasizing the need for the judicial system to “play its role in imposing penalties.” Enditem
