Transport fares set to go up by 20% over ‘dumsor’ levy, other factors

Public transport fares are set to go up by 20 percent effective Friday, August 8, 2025, the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) confirmed on Tuesday in a statement.

The statement signed by General Secretary for the GRTCC Emmanuel Ohene-Yeboah cited the introduction of the Energy Sector Levy, or ‘dumsor’ levy, introduced recently by the government, and the failure of spare parts operators to reduce prices, as well as the increase in maintenance cost due to deplorable roads.

“In line with the administrative arrangement on public transport fares, the Road Transport Operators have increased public transport fares by 20 percent to accommodate the non-corresponding reduction in spare parts, goods and services after the reduction of transport fares by 15% on 21st May, 2025; to accommodate for the increase in operational costs after the introduction of GHC1.00 per liter levy; and to accommodate for the increase in maintenance cost as a result of the deplorable roads across the country,” read the statement.

According to the GRTCC, the new fares cover the following types of road transport operations, including shared taxis, intracity(tro-tro), intercity or long distance, and haulage.

The GRTCC urged all commercial transport operators and companies to comply with the new fares and post the same at their loading terminals.

It also requested all operators, commuters, and the general public to cooperate for a seamless implementation. Enditem
