“Our true opponent is not within” – Bawumia tells NPP after filing to join flagbearer race

By Francis Kobena Tandoh

Former Vice President and flagbearer of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 general election, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has urged party supporters to stop the internal attacks and bickering, as their true opponents were out there.

Addressing party supporters after filing his nomination papers on Thursday at the party’s headquarters to join the presidential contest early next year, Dr. Bawumia observed that such behavior offered valuable ammunition to their political opponents to be used against them in the general election.

“Let’s stop the internal attacks; let’s stop the tribal politics, as our opponents will use it against us. Our true opponent is not within; it is out there,” said Dr. Bawumia.

He observed that he is the most marketed candidate within the opposition party and appealed to delegates to elect him as the candidate to deliver the victory for the party in the next general election.

“There is no village, or hamlet, or city, or town where Mahamudu Bawumia’s face and name are not known. I owe this party and duty that if we are to win 2028, we ought not to start afresh from zero. Instead, we ought to build on the nearly valid 42% of valid votes and work to cross the 50% mark in our next election,” he added.

He touted the remarkable achievements by the party under former President Nana Addo Dankwa, which saw improvement in the living conditions of the people.

“It is a distinctive privilege to serve as vice president and support the government in our last administration with ideas that have significantly impacted the lives of millions of our people,” he further stated.

Dr. Bawumia observed his vision for the country is to build a digital and modern economy for the country.

Having submitted his forms, the 2024 NPP presidential candidate joins former General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, former Assin Central Member of Parliament Kennedy Agyapong, and former Food and Agriculture Minister Dr. Bryan Acheampong to have picked and submitted their nomination forms.

NPP stalwart Ing. Francis Addai-Nimoh on Wednesday announced he will not be contesting the party’s presidential primaries, citing four reasons, including what he describes as “inappropriate timing for the conduct of the presidential primary and the top-down approach adopted by the party to conduct internal elections.”

After the close of nomination, the party will then commence vetting of all aspirants between September 15 and 22, 2025, after which a vetting report will be submitted to the leadership of the party on September 29 this year.

The final list of aspirants will be announced and published by the party on October 8, after which a notice of poll will be issued on October 17.

The NPP will then hold a presidential primary to elect its flagbearer on January 31, 2026, and make room for a potential runoff of the primary on February 14, 2026. End item
