Twenty-three-year-old Ghanaian athlete Rose Amoaniwaa Yeboah on Thursday made history by becoming the first woman from the West African country to qualify for the final of the World Athletics Championship.

Yeboah cleared a height of 1.92 meters to finish among the top 16 athletes to make it to the final of the women’s high jump event at the ongoing championship in Tokyo, Japan.

The qualification round saw 12 athletes progress after meeting the automatic qualifying mark of 1.92 m.

She expressed her excitement about her new achievement on the global stage.

“I feel so good. I needed this…my coach was like, “Rose, this 1.92—if you are able to clear it in your first attempt, you are going to make the final,” and here I am. I’m so glad; I’m happy,” said Yeboah to the international media.

Yeboah’s performance makes her the first Ghanaian athlete to reach the final of an individual event at the championship after Ignatius Gaisah and Margaret Simpson in 2005.
