Abiba Asoma organises free health screening for GNAT Members

In a bid to promote the health and well-being of teachers, Ms. Abiba Asoma, Northern Regional aspirant for the GNATLAS Coordinator position under the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), organised a free health screening exercise for GNAT members in collaboration with the Tamale Regional Hospital.

The exercise, which took place alongside the GNAT Regional Conference, was held ahead of the highly anticipated elections on July 31.

Speaking to MyDailyNewsOnline, Ms. Asoma disclosed that the initiative benefited over 400 teachers. Participants were screened for weight, sugar levels, blood pressure, and Hepatitis B.

“This screening was part of my broader commitment to prioritising teachers’ welfare and encouraging regular medical checkups,” she said. “Healthy teachers make for a more effective and vibrant educational system.”

Ms. Asoma, who is number two on the ballot, urged delegates particularly female GNAT members in the Northern Region to support her bid for the GNATLAS Coordinator role.

“I am passionate about inclusion, empowering women in the teaching profession, and driving meaningful change within the union,” she added.

A strong advocate for gender equity, Ms. Asoma previously served as Gender Commissioner at the University of Education, Winneba in 2021, and was later elected National Gender Commissioner for the Graduate Students’ Association of Ghana (GRASAG) in 2022.

The health screening formed part of her wider outreach efforts across schools in the region, as she campaigns for inclusive and impactful leadership within GNAT.
