Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, said on Tuesday that the current leadership of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) could face “scary” bail conditions in the future if the standards being applied to some former government officials continue.
Addressing a press conference, the Efutu Constituency Member of Parliament (MP) said the conditions imposed on some individuals under investigation were setting a precedent that could have consequences for officials of the current administration if political power changes hands.
He specifically linked his warning to allegations surrounding GoldBod and claims of losses running into about GH¢22 billion, while cautioning current officials to consider how today’s practices could affect them in the future.
Afenyo-Markin argued that investigations and bail conditions should be guided by established legal principles rather than political considerations.
His comments come amid heightened political debate over investigations into alleged wrongdoing under the previous administration, with the Minority accusing the government of political persecution, while the government maintains that the investigations are aimed at accountability and recovery of state resources.
