The official ceremony for the commencement of the 24th edition of the African Senior Athletics Championships was held at the University of Ghana, Legon, a suburb of the Ghanaian capital of Accra, late Monday.
Athletes, officials, and fans from various parts of the continent filled the stadium with color, excitement, and national pride with performances by renowned musicians in the country.
The chief of staff of the government of Ghana said the championship was not only a showcase of speed and strength but also a celebration of determination, hard work, and the relentless pursuit of excellence and urged unity among Africans.
“From every corner of our continent, young men and women have come together not as strangers but as one African family united by excellence, ambition, and sportsmanship,” said Debrah.
He emphasized that Ghana was proud to host the championship, describing it as a moment of great national pride that would inspire the youth, promote excellence in athletics, and strengthen the enduring bonds of brotherhood and unity across Africa.
The top Ghana government official further urged African nations to deliberately invest in sports infrastructure, youth development, coaching, and talent identification to ensure the sustained growth and global competitiveness of athletics on the continent.
Ghana’s minister for sports and recreation, Kofi Iddie Adams, urged Africans to build strong and sustainable systems that would enable talents across the continent to compete at the highest level.
At least some 1,500 athletes and 500 officials from about 54 countries are in Accra for Africa’s premier athletics competition, which will feature events across 44 disciplines.
The championship, which began on May 12, is scheduled to end on May 17. Enditem
