African Senior Athletics Championships: South Africa tops medal table, Ghana ends with 5 medals

The 24th African Senior Athletics Championships officially concluded at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, Legon, near the capital, Accra, late Sunday with South Africa clinching most medals, organizers confirmed.

According to the medals table released by the organizers, South Africa picked a total of 21 medals comprising nine gold, three silver, and nine bronze.

Kenya came after South Africa with 17 medals, including five gold, five silver, and seven bronze, while Ethiopia placed third with five gold, four silver, and five bronze medals.

Nigeria, one of the strong contenders in athletics on the continent, placed fourth with 12 medals comprising four gold, five silver, and three bronze medals, with Cameroon rounding up the top five with four gold, one silver, and two bronze medals.

Despite the high expectations as the host nation, Ghana finished 20th in the championship, securing a silver and four bronze medals, ahead of Liberia, Cape Verde, Gabon, Mali, Rwanda, and Benin.

In all, a total of 26 countries that participated in the championships picked up medals in the various categories, while 20 others did not win a single medal.
