Tens of thousands of fans packed Dallas Stadium on Monday afternoon to watch Lionel Messi make World Cup history.
The Argentina captain scored twice in a 2-0 win over Austria, becoming the all-time leading goalscorer in FIFA World Cup history.
Footage shows supporters streaming around the stadium, cheering and waving the flags of both countries before the Group J clash.
“We’ve already experienced other World Cups and the Copa America, and we’ve never seen this many people. There are so many people supporting Argentina,” said one Argentinian fan. “The passion for the team is on another level.”
Another Argentinian supporter said he could not miss the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Messi having announced it would be his last.
“We hope that in his final World Cup, he gives us the joy we’ve been waiting for,” he added.
Austrian fans also soaked up the atmosphere, praising the warm exchange between both sets of supporters and saying that meeting fans from around the world is one of the best parts of the tournament.
“It is our first appearance in 28 years, so we were all excited to play the reigning champions, Argentina, and see the greatest guy on the planet: Lionel Messi,” one Austrian fan said.
Messi’s brace took him to 18 World Cup goals, two clear of former record-holder Miroslav Klose of Germany. The win also sent Argentina into the knockout stage from Group J, where they are joined by Austria, Jordan and Algeria.
