African women leaders call for unity and action at Burundi forum

Women leaders and officials gathered in Bujumbura, Burundi, for the seventh High-Level Forum of Women Leaders, calling for greater unity, education and a stronger role for women in decision-making.

Footage filmed on Wednesday shows Burundi’s First Lady Angeline Ndayishimiye Ndayubaha welcoming dignitaries before joining President Evariste Ndayishimiye at the forum.

“The future belongs to those who understand that by coming together, they will be stronger. But by isolating themselves, they will remain isolated,” said Jeanne Gapiya, a women’s leader in the health sector.

Speakers also stressed the importance of educating women and girls.

“It is often said that educating a woman means educating an entire nation. This statement takes on its full meaning in everyday life,” said Brigitte Mukanga-Eno, Acting UN Resident Coordinator and UNHCR Representative in Burundi.

“An educated woman shares her knowledge, protects her family and supports her children’s education. She contributes to the economy and participates in decision-making within her community,” she added.

The forum also focused on women’s role in tackling climate change.

“It is important not to view women solely as victims of climate change. They are also key players in prevention, adaptation and the search for sustainable solutions,” said Ezechiel Nibigira, President of the ECCAS Commission.

The two-day forum also brought together First Ladies from Angola, Senegal and the Central African Republic, with discussions covering women’s economic empowerment and climate resilience.
