At least 17 rescued in flash floods in China’s Fujian Province

Rescuers saved 17 tourists, including several children, after they were trapped by flash floods at Lujitan Forest Park in Fuzhou, Fujian Province, on Saturday, as prolonged downpours continued to trigger flooding across China.

Footage shows firefighters helping people cross a raging torrent using a temporary handrail. In neighbouring Jiangxi Province, two people were also stranded after water levels rose in local rivers.

One emergency worker was briefly swept away by the current, but rescuers managed to pull him back and bring the trapped residents to safety.

The latest rescues come as severe flooding continues to affect several parts of China. In southwestern Chongqing, three people were killed, and 19 others remain missing following recent floods, with rescue operations still underway.

Beijing activated a Level-IV national disaster response, sent a work team to affected areas and released 20 million yuan ($2.94 million US) in emergency funding.

The flooding was triggered by torrential rain that has battered parts of the country since last month. According to the National Climate Centre, average national precipitation has reached 110.1 millimetres, around 18 percent above the seasonal norm. Enditem
