Artificial intelligence stayed high on the agenda as senior Chinese and US officials met in New York on Sunday for talks on ‘economic and trade issues’, just days before Presidents Xi Jinping and Donald Trump meet in Washington.
Footage shows Chinese Vice Minister of Commerce Li Chenggang leaving JPMorgan Chase’s Manhattan headquarters as journalists pressed him with questions.
Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng led Beijing’s delegation in talks with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.
Asked how the discussions had gone, Li replied: “Good. Our team will continue working together.”
Asked whether artificial intelligence had been discussed, Li said: ‘Yes, we did.’
He also hinted that talks could continue on Monday.
“We just had a very successful engagement with the Chinese on trade and AI, completing where we left off in Beijing,” Bessent told reporters.
The US proposed a ‘notification mechanism’ covering AI incidents serious enough to affect national security, with Bessent calling for greater transparency between the world’s two leading AI powers.
The talks set the stage for Trump’s meeting with Xi in Washington on September 24, where trade, tariffs, rare earths and other points of friction between the world’s two largest economies are expected to feature prominently.
