All Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in the Greater Accra Region have been directed to assemble at the Accra International Airport (AIA) on Sunday to give President John Dramani Mahama a rousing welcome, according to an invitation extended to the appointees on Friday.
The rousing welcome, according to the invite signed by Anthony Nukpenu, Regional Political Coordinator, is in recognition of President Mahama’s effort at getting the UN to pass a motion on reparative justice.
“Please be informed that the president of Ghana having attained a global feet in achieving a resolution in support of Africa reparations will return home on Sunday, 29th March, 2026 at 3.00 pm. On this auspicious occasion, he deserves a resounding welcome,” read the invite.
“The office of the Chief of Staff is therefore inviting all Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives in the Greater Accra Region to assemble at the Accra International Airport VIP lounge for this occasion,” it added.
The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Wednesday passed a motion on reparations for the transatlantic slave trade led by President Mahama with 123 member states voting in favour.
The motion calls for a renewed international commitment to reparative justice for African nations and the descendants of enslaved people.
It urged UN member states to engage in structured dialogue and concrete actions aimed at acknowledging and addressing the enduring social, economic, and cultural impacts of slavery.
After extensive debates, the motion was adopted with 123 votes in support. Three countries including the United States of America (USA), Argentina, and Israel voted against it, while 52 nations abstained from the vote.
The USA described the African Union Reparatory Justice Resolution as “highly problematic.” It however acknowledged the historical wrongs of slavery but said it could not support the motion, citing uncertainty over who the intended recipients of reparatory justice would be. Enditem
