Austria thrashes Ghana 5-1 in international friendly ahead of FIFA World Cup

The Black Stars of Ghana lost 5-1 to Austria in an international friendly at the Ernst Happel-Stadion in Vienna on Friday evening.

The hosts, who began the game on a good note, scored their first goal through a penalty after Ghana’s Jonas Adjetey handled the ball. Austria’s captain M. Sarbitzer converted expertly to give his side 1-0 in the 13th minute.

Despite lifting up their game, Ghana failed to find the equalizer going into half time.

Austria came back into the second half mounting incessant pressure on the Ghanaians and scored two goals in the 51st and 59th minutes through M. Gregoritsch and S. Posch, respectively.

Black Stars captain Jordan Ayew pulled one back for his side in the 77th minute, but the hosts scored another goal four minutes later through C. Chukwuemeka. The home side scored their final goal in injury time through N. Seiwald.

The friendly match forms part of preparations ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Ghana comes up against Germany in another friendly on Monday.

Ghana is paired in Group L in the World Cup alongside Panama, England, and Croatia. Enditem
