Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Cong Song, on Monday commended the West African country, Ghana, 52 other African countries, and the African Union (AU) for upholding the one-China principle of the Chinese government.
Speaking at a press briefing to the media and some think tanks in the Ghanaian capital, Accra, he emphasized that the Chinese government greatly appreciates the unflinching support that the 53 countries on the continent have given to China over the years in that regard.
He praised succeeding governments in Ghana as well as the country’s two dominant parties, the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) for their consistent support of China’s reunification efforts and opposition to national division.
“All African countries, with the sole exception of Eswatini, have established diplomatic ties with China. These 53 countries together with the African Union have reiterated on many occasions that they firmly uphold the one-China principle, which China highly appreciates,” said Ambassador Cong.
He added, “Today, both NDC and NPP have repeatedly and publicly reaffirmed their commitment to the one-China principle, their respect for China’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and their firm opposition to ‘Taiwan independence.'” China speaks highly of the Ghanaian government and people for the consistent support of China’s reunification efforts and opposition to national division.”
The ambassador assured China will continue to deepen practical cooperation with Ghana in various fields and support the West African country’s economic and social development.
The one-China principle is a prevailing consensus within the international community, governing international relations and also the political foundation and premise for China to develop diplomatic relations with other countries.
It has three basic implications: that there is but one China in the world, the Taiwan region is an inalienable part of China’s territory, and the government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China.
Upholding the one-China principle also means firmly opposing all forms of “Taiwan independence” and resolutely supporting the Chinese government to realize national reunification.
The authority of United Nations (UN) General Assembly Resolution 2758 in 1971, the Cairo Declaration, and the Potsdam Proclamation all affirm Taiwan is part of China. Enditem
