Continuous rainfall from Sunday night through to the morning has caused flooding across parts of Accra and the Tema enclave, disrupting movement and leaving many commuters delayed or stranded on key road corridors.
Floodwaters were reported in low-lying areas and along key arterial roads, with vehicles moving slowly through submerged sections while some motorists were forced to abandon flooded routes.
The downpour, which lasted for several hours, significantly affected the morning rush hour on Monday, leaving residents struggling to get to work and school amid waterlogged streets and severe traffic congestion.
Affected areas include parts of the N1 Highway, Apenkwa towards Tesano, the Accra–Kasoa stretch, Weija, Mallam, Achimota, Spintex, Atomic in Madina, Kaneshie, Darkuman Junction, portions of the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange, and other surrounding communities, according to residents and road users.
Other affected areas are Afienya and its environs as well as the Kpone-Katamanso municipality, where the drainage system is virtually non-existent.
The flooding led to long vehicular traffic queues and slower travel times on the Afienya-Tema main road, the Katamanso-Ashaiman stretch, as well as the Dawhenya-Tema, with several vehicles diverting or turning back from submerged sections.
The downpour has caused delays for workers, students, and public transport users and temporary access challenges for pedestrians in low-lying areas.
Authorities have repeatedly advised road users to avoid driving through flooded sections and to delay non-essential trips until water levels reduce.
Meanwhile motorists and commuters have been warned to avoid the following areas including;
N1 Highway (Apenkwa towards Tesano stretch)
Kwame Nkrumah Interchange (Circle enclave & Odawna)
Kaneshie (First Light & Darkuman Junction)
Accra–Kasoa Highway (Weija & Mallam sections)
Tema Communities (Community 25 & Golf City)
Spintex Road, Achimota, & Atomic (Madina)
