Drivers to park vehicles Wednesday over trading at bus stops, walkways

Transport operators will park their vehicles on Wednesday, Nov. 4, to protest against the non-enforcement of L.I. 2519 Regulation 142, according to a statement released here.

The statement, jointly signed by various driver unions, including the GPRTU of TUC, Transport Operators of Ghana, True Drivers Union, Ghana Committed Drivers Association, and Concerned Drivers Association, said the action is as a result of the failure of the government and the Ghana Police Service to prohibit people from trading on bus stops and pedestrian walkways.

The drivers said they cannot continue to do their work while the government rolls out TRAFFITECH-GH to fine and harass them.

“The leadership of GPRTU of TUC, Transport Operators of Ghana, True Drivers Union, Ghana Committed Drivers Association, and Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana wishes to announce with deep regret to the general public that no commercial vehicle will be moving on Wednesday, November 4, 2026,” read the statement.

It added, “This is due to the total neglect and failure of government and the Ghana Police Service to enforce L.I. 2519 Regulation 142, which prohibits trading on bus stops and pedestrian walkways, while the government is still rolling out TRAFFITECH-GH to fine and harass drivers.”

The drivers said they will not operate in bus stops occupied by traders and will still be fined by cameras.

TRAFFITECH-GH is an automated traffic enforcement system launched by the Ghana Police Service and the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) to enforce road laws and improve road safety.

The new system officially went live on November 1, 2026, backed by the Road Traffic Regulations, 2026 / L.I. 2519.

It uses fixed cameras, mobile police vehicle cameras, tripod-mounted cameras, and speed-measurement sensors to capture traffic violations.

Confirmed violations trigger an Electronic Notice of Violation (ENV) sent via SMS with the sender ID GPS-MTTD.

Fines and digital evidence can be reviewed and paid via the Ghana.gov portal, with motorists given up to 14 days to pay or contest the fine. Enditem
