The Ghanaian government has closed its embassy in Iran due to the escalation of conflict in the Middle East, a statement from the Foreign Affairs Ministry announced Monday.
According to the statement, the government is also evacuating all of the Ghanaian nationals from the area to ensure their safety.
“The Mahama administration, in the interest of the protection of Ghanaian lives, has decided to immediately evacuate Ghanaians living in Iran following an escalation of the Israel-Iran conflict,” said the statement.
“To guarantee the safety of our embassy staff, Ghana’s embassy in Tehran has been closed with immediate effect. The evacuation through land borders covers all Ghanaian diplomats, students, professionals, and other compatriots,” it added.
Meanwhile, operations of Ghana’s embassy in Israel have been reduced to the “barest minimum,” while the government assures that no effort will be spared in protecting Ghanaian lives and keeping their nationals out of harm.
Israel launched a surprise assault on Friday, wiping out the top echelon of Iran’s military command and damaging its nuclear sites. It has said the campaign will escalate in the coming days.
Oil prices edged down on Monday, after surging 7 percent on Friday, as the military strikes by Israel and Iran over the weekend avoided oil production and export facilities. Enditem
