Ghana withdraws from hosting 2026 African Swimming Championships

Ghana has withdrawn from hosting the 2026 African Swimming Championships, according to a statement by the Ghana Swimming Association (GSA) late Thursday.

The withdrawal, according to the association, stems from the failure of the country’s Sports and Recreation Ministry to approve the hosting of the championships as well as internal governance challenges.

“It is with profound regret that the Ghana Swimming Association announces Ghana’s withdrawal from hosting the 2026 African Swimming Championships. The association, on November 14, 2025, formally notified the ministry and sought its approval and acceptance to proceed with hosting the championships. Regrettably, no formal response has been received from the ministry to date,” read the statement.

“The preparations towards the hosting of the championships have been significantly undermined by the linking of ongoing internal governance challenges in the association to the hosting of the championships by individuals wielding governmental authority and influence,” added the statement.

The GSA also accused the National Sports Authority of unilaterally communicating to World Aquatics a withdrawal notice of its recognition of the association in Ghana.

The 2026 African Swimming Championships were scheduled to take place in the Ghanaian capital from 5th to 10th May, 2026.

The West African country was awarded the hosting rights for the 2026 African Swimming Championships at the African Swimming Championships held in Cairo, Egypt, in April 2025. The decision was later confirmed by the African Aquatics Bureau. Enditem
