Ghana’s economy grows 7.7 pct in February

Ghana’s economy grew 7.7 percent in February, marking a year-on-year increase of 3.8 percentage points, the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) said Wednesday.

Addressing a press briefing on the monthly growth rate in Accra, the capital of Ghana, Government Statistician Alhassan Iddrisu said the industry sector mainly drove the growth.

“During February, economic activities in the industries sector expanded by 9.6 percent compared to 2.8 percent in February last year. This is an indication of an expansion in manufacturing, electricity, and mining and quarrying activities, compared to the same period last year,” Iddrisu said.

According to him, economic activities within the services sector expanded by 7.4 percent in February, compared to 4.4 percent a year earlier, while the agricultural sector’s economic activities also expanded by 3.8 percent, a 5.6 percentage-point decline from 9.4 percent recorded in the same period last year.

Meanwhile, the GSS revised the monthly inflation rate for January to 6.1 percent, down from the previously reported 7.5 percent.

“This revision is mainly due to new data on fisheries, trade, manufacturing, electricity, public administration, education, and health sub-sectors. The services sector saw the largest downward revision, and industry was revised upwards,” said the GSS. Enditem
