Govt releases funds to clear arrears of Judicial Staff after strike paralyses courts nationwide

By Francis Kobena Tandoh

The government has released funds for the payment of arrears to members of the Lower Court Bench and staff of the Judicial Service, according to a statement late Monday.

The statement, signed by Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson announced that the President has granted approval for the implementation of new conditions of service for staff of the Judicial Service and members of the Lower Court Bench with effect from January 1, 2026.

The Finance Minister explained that the government has scheduled to pay the arrears to the affected members in two tranches.

The first tranche, which will be paid at the end of November 2026, will cover five months of arrears from January to May 2026, while the final tranche, which spans arrears from June to October 2026, will be paid at the end of December this year.

Members of the Judicial Staff Association of Ghana embarked on an industrial action commencing Monday over the failure by the government to approve and pay their revised salary arrears and allowances dating back to January 2026.

The strike led to a total shutdown of the Supreme Court, the Court of Appeal, Accra High Court, Accra Circuit Court, and various District Courts nationwide.

The various court premises featured locked gates, red bands/cloths tied to entrances with security officers restricting access, and near-empty court compounds.

Lawyers and clients who had gone to the various courts had to be turned away following the strike by the judicial staff. Enditem
