GTEC cautions public against 62 unrecognised institutions

By Francis Kobena Tandoh

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has cautioned the public against some 62 unrecognised institutions, according to a list released over the weekend.

GTEC is therefore warning the public to be cautious when dealing with certificates issued by these entities due to serious quality assurance concerns.

The Commission listed a mix of universities, colleges, and seminaries from across the world, including some operating within Ghana. GTEC cautioned prospective students, parents, and employers to exercise due diligence before engaging with these institutions or accepting qualifications obtained from them.

According to the Commission, the move forms part of its mandate to protect the integrity of Ghana’s tertiary education system and to shield the public from substandard or fraudulent academic credentials.

Among the listed institutions are several based in Ghana, raising significant concern about their accessibility to local students. These include Debest College of Science, Arts and Business; Faith University Seminary (FUS) Ghana; Doxa Open University; Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Training School; Quest International University; Kingdom Living Bible Institute in Kumasi; and Global Professional College in Effiduase.

GTEC warned that such institutions may be actively recruiting unsuspecting students under false pretences, offering programmes that do not meet nationally approved academic standards.

The list also includes a number of international institutions with reputable-sounding names. Among them are Universidad Azteca Mexico; Atlantic International University (USA); Selinus University of Sciences and Literature (Italy); Crown University International Chartered (USA); and Texila American University (Guyana).

Others cited are the London Academy of Technology and Management (UK); University of Haana (Germany); East Bridge University (France); Dublin Metropolitan University (UK/Cyprus); and Swiss Management Centre University (Switzerland).

Several Bible colleges and theological seminaries were also named, including Rhema Bible Training College (USA); Christian Leadership University (USA); New Life Bible College and Seminary (USA); and Logos University (USA).

Although GTEC did not provide detailed reasons for each listing, it indicated that the institutions either lack proper accreditation, fail to meet Ghana’s educational standards, or operate with questionable academic integrity.

The Commission warned that qualifications from these institutions may not be recognised for public sector employment, further academic progression, or professional licensing in Ghana.

Employers have also been advised to verify the accreditation status of applicants’ qualifications, particularly when they originate from unfamiliar institutions.

GTEC is thus urging the public to verify the accreditation status of any tertiary institution through its official channels before enrolling. The Commission emphasised that due diligence is essential to avoid investing time and money in programmes that may not be recognised.
