Emmanuel Macron insisted he wasn’t ‘anti-Chinese’ – but accused Beijing of not playing fair – as he held a presser alongside German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Bruhl on Friday.
“We are not at all anti-Chinese, to be clear, both in our diplomacy and in our economy. But we look at it realistically. Our Europe is, every day, a billion euros is a trade deficit with China of a billion euros every day,” he said.
“Today, we are being disrupted. Why? Because we have a China that supports its enterprises on average eight times more than the OECD average and us, and that does not respect the rules of the game,” he alleged.
Beijing has not responded at time of publication. Merz and Macron were outlining defence plans one month after the collapse of the landmark FCAS joint fighter jet project.
