‘We owe them a safer country’ – Uganda mourns 21 killed in bus crash, suspends school trips

Uganda suspended all school trips and educational tours on Friday after a bus crash in the eastern district of Kapchorwa killed 20 children and one adult.

“All study trips and tours that involve learners having to travel in group transport by land within the country or going outside Uganda are hereby suspended until further notice,” Acting Education Minister John Chrysostom Muyingo said.

He also announced an inter-ministerial task force would be established within seven days to draw up comprehensive regulations governing educational trips and strengthen learner safety.

ICT and National Guidance Minister Justine Kasule Lumumba offered condolences to the victims’ families.

“We cannot bring back the lives of our children, but we owe them, and all of you Ugandans, a safer country,” she said. “May the souls of our departed children rest in eternal peace. And may God comfort all the affected families.”

The measures followed Thursday night’s crash at Chekwatit Village in Kapchorwa District. The bus was carrying pupils from King David Junior School back from an educational trip to Sipi Falls when it left the road, struck a large rock and overturned.

Police said 20 pupils and one adult were killed, while several other children and adults were taken to hospital. Investigations into the cause of the crash are continuing.
