Donald Trump claimed Iran’s assets to be ‘unfrozen’ to buy US goods, following the first round of talks on a final deal with Iran in Burgenstock, speaking with reporters at the White House on Monday.
It followed a similar announcement by his negotiator -US VP JD Vance – earlier in the day.
“One of the things that we are doing also, and it came up last night, is money that’s being unfrozen is going to be used to buy food, and the food is going to be bought exclusively through the United States from our farmers. And corn, soybeans, all of the things they need are going to be bought from our farmers. So our farmers are very happy,” Trump alleged.
Earlier, Vance said there had been ‘good progress’ – despite what he called ‘a little bit of threatening and a little bit of whining’ – and denied reports the Iranians had ‘walked out’.
It followed talks with the Iranian delegation, as well as Qatari and Pakistani mediators. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said there had been ‘major progress’. “Pakistani and Qatari mediation has delivered major progress to end Lebanon War,” he posted on social media. “Oil and petrochem exports are waived, blockade lifted, some frozen assets released, and major reconstruction and development plan launched for Iran.”
Israel has continued to hit Lebanon, with both the IDF and Hezbollah accusing each other of breaking the latest ceasefire. The US and Iran reached a ‘Memorandum of Understanding’ last week – with 60 days to secure a final deal.
