James Victor Gbeho, former Ghanaian FM, ECOWAS Commission President, dies at age 91

Ghana’s former Foreign Affairs Minister and former President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission, James Victor Gbeho has passed away at the age of 91, family sources have confirmed.

According to family sources, the Ghanaian diplomat died on Saturday, June 13, 2026, after decades of public and diplomatic service.

Born in Keta in Ghana’s Volta Region in 1935, Gbeho built one of the country’s longest and most distinguished diplomatic careers.

He served as Ghana’s foreign affairs minister from 1997 to 2001 under Jerry John Rawlings and later represented Ghana in several international assignments, including at the United Nations.

Regionally, he became President of the ECOWAS Commission in 2010, succeeding Mohamed Ibn Chambas and helping guide regional cooperation and diplomacy during a significant period for West Africa.

Gbeho was also the son of Philip Gbeho, linking him to another notable chapter of Ghana’s national history.
