Kapchorwa tragedy- Bus crash kills 21 as Uganda suspends school trips nationwide

Uganda has suspended all school trips after a bus carrying pupils on a study tour crashed in eastern Uganda, killing 20 students and a school administrator from King David Junior School and injuring dozens more.

Footage filmed on Friday shows grieving families and mourners gathering at the school, including a distressed woman being assisted.

Uganda’s acting Education Minister, John Chrysostom Muyingo, said the suspension would give authorities time to strengthen school transport safety.

“You cannot sit back and wait for what happens tomorrow. That’s why I’m saying, from now on, let’s suspend trips, tours and excursions that require people to move long distances,” Muyingo explained. “We want to use that time to prepare all the stakeholders to strictly observe the guidelines.”

Muyingo said the government had ordered an investigation into the crash and the condition of school transport vehicles before introducing new safety measures.

“We want an investigation. We want the government to make sure that we get to the root cause of why we have so many dead people. Why? And once we have that report, we will be able to come up with new.” he added.

The bus was returning from Sipi Falls when it crashed in Kapchorwa District on Thursday night.

The government has suspended all school trips nationwide as authorities continue investigating the crash and reviewing its circumstances.
