Komfo Anokye doctors begin indefinite strike, call for immediate reversal of CEO’s suspension

By Francis Kobena Tandoh

Medical doctors at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) have declared an indefinite strike following the suspension of Dr. Paa Kwesi Baidoo, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the facility, according to a statement on Saturday.

The doctors are also demanding the reversal of the suspension of the chief executive officer by the health minister.

The statement, signed by Dr. Michael Leat, Chairman of the Komfo Anokye Doctors Association (KADA), described the suspension of the CEO as unfair and could negatively affect the management and operations of the hospital.

The dispute follows a decision by the Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, to suspend the CEO for two weeks after concerns surrounding the hospital’s handling of emergency admissions amid capacity challenges.

The doctors condemned the action of the minister in suspending the CEO, describing the decision as unjustified in the prevailing circumstances under which they carry out their services.

According to the statement, the doctors, after a meeting, called on the government to immediately revoke the suspension and warned that failure to do so could lead to a full-scale strike that may disrupt healthcare delivery at the major referral facility serving the Ashanti and northern sectors of Ghana.

“The meeting, therefore, unanimously adopted the following resolutions: to commence a total withdrawal of services by medical doctors of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital effective 6.00 a.m. on Saturday, 6th June 2026. The suspension of the chief executive is reviewed and reversed,” read the statement.

The doctors also urged the Ministry of Health to come out with clear timelines to operationalize the Sewua Hospital and the Afari Military Hospital, as well as the timelines for the retooling of KATH and the other hospitals within the Ashanti Region, to ease the burden.

The development has sparked debate within the health sector, with many stakeholders closely monitoring efforts by the Ministry of Health and hospital management to resolve the impasse and avoid prolonged disruptions to patient care. Enditem
