Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov came face-to-face with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York on Wednesday.
Footage shows the two top diplomats sitting at the negotiating table.
The US State Department later said that Rubio and Lavrov had discussed the conflict in Ukraine, as well as relations between Washington and Moscow.
Rubio was asked about the talks in a press briefing just afterwards, saying he wasn’t going to give a ‘blow-by-blow of what happened for a variety of different reasons.”
“I don’t want to mischaracterise this as a major breakthrough. But at the same time, I think it was significant that at least there was a conversation,” he said. “We’ve invited President Putin to the G20. We think it’s an opportunity for him to engage not just with the president but with other world leaders.”
Lavrov arrived in New York on September 23 to take part in the high-level week of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, which runs through September 28. Heads of state and government, as well as foreign ministers, are expected to discuss key international issues.
