US President Donald Trump greets Xi Jinping on the tarmac at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland, as the Chinese president begins his historic three-day state visit to the United States.
It represents a very rare protocol gesture for a US president receiving a visiting foreign leader – with heads of state usually received at the White House.
Xi is making his first state visit to Washington in more than a decade. Talks at the White House follow on Thursday, with trade talks high on the agenda – and that US-China trade truce set to expire this November – as well as critical minerals, artificial intelligence and Taiwan.
