Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama has arrived in Luanda, Angola, to participate in the 21st Extraordinary Session of the African Union (AU) Assembly of Heads of State and Government.
The summit, scheduled for Sunday, August 30, will focus on strengthening Africa’s mechanisms for preventing and resolving conflicts.
African leaders are expected to consider and adopt a comprehensive decision, action plan and implementation matrix aimed at improving the continent’s response to conflicts.
The meeting will also assess the effectiveness of the African Peace and Security Architecture and the African Governance Architecture, with discussions centred on coordination, implementation, responsiveness and financing.
The summit comes as several parts of Africa continue to face serious security challenges, including ongoing conflicts in Sudan and eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, persistent insecurity and instability in the Sahel and Horn of Africa, and an ongoing insurgency in northern Mozambique.
The meeting is being led by Angolan President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço, the AU Champion for Peace and Reconciliation in Africa.
President Mahama and other African leaders are expected to agree on practical measures to strengthen peacebuilding efforts and improve the continent’s collective capacity to prevent conflicts and respond effectively to emerging security threats. Enditem
