Mexican Navy ships bring 388 tonnes of quake aid to La Guaira

Two Mexican Navy ships arrived at the Venezuelan port of La Guaira on Monday with 388.42 tonnes of humanitarian aid, sent in response to the emergency caused by the earthquakes that struck Venezuela on June 24.

Footage released by state-run Venezolana de Television shows a Mexican government vessel docked, along with boxes of humanitarian supplies that are part of the cargo delivered to Venezuela.

The logistics support ships ARM ‘Isla Holbox’ (BAL-02) and ARM ‘Huasteco’ (AMP-01) were carrying food, bottled water, personal hygiene items, medicines, medical supplies and four water purification plants, each able to produce 1,000 litres of purified water per hour, according to Mexican authorities.

Yvan Gil, Venezuela’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, thanked Mexico for the ‘considerable aid to address the national emergency’ and recognised Mexico as one of the first countries to send humanitarian aid to Venezuela after the earthquakes.

“We must convey, on behalf of President Delcy Rodriguez, acting president, well, a message of gratitude and convey to the Mexican government that these gestures truly uplift the Latin American community. Today Mexico has truly demonstrated the purpose of our solidarity, of our support, and Venezuela will never forget,” he said.

Mexico’s ambassador to Venezuela, Leopoldo de Gyves Pineda, said the decision to send humanitarian aid was made by Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, ‘moved by the spirit of solidarity of our country’.

The operation was coordinated by Mexico’s Secretariat of the Navy, Secretariat of Foreign Relations and various institutions, companies, foundations and civil society organisations that helped assemble the food and supplies sent to Venezuela.

Mexican authorities said 100 members of the Mexican Navy’s Emergency Response Brigades will take part in unloading the shipment, installing and starting up the water purification plants, and supporting the organisation and distribution of humanitarian aid alongside Venezuelan authorities.

The official toll after the earthquakes in Venezuela stands at 4,561 dead, 16,740 injured and 6,462 rescued. During the emergency, the South American country has received humanitarian aid from dozens of countries by land, air and sea.
