The three major pre-tertiary teacher unions in Ghana have called off their planned nationwide strike following a meeting with Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu in the national capital on Monday.
The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG) had threatened industrial action over delays in placing newly promoted teachers on their appropriate salary scales.
According to the agreement, all teachers who passed the 2025 aptitude test, numbering about 80,000 will automatically be placed on their rightful salary scales and levels in September.
The substantive date for the two cohorts of teachers who wrote the examination in December 2025 and February 2026 according to the agreement is January 2026 and that payment shall be made in September.
The unions’ decision has averted an immediate disruption to teaching and learning in pre-tertiary schools with the new academic year set to begin next week.
However, union leaders say they will monitor the implementation of the agreement and expect government to honour the agreed timelines. Enditem
