‘More oil has come out than any time in history!’ – Trump on ‘total control’ of Hormuz Strait

Donald Trump claimed the US had ‘total control’ of the Hormuz Strait – saying ‘more oil has come out than any time in history’ – during an event marking Hispanic Heritage Month in DC on Wednesday.

“This last week in the Hormuz Strait, which we have almost total control, I would say total, but every once in a while they’ll drop a mine in there and disrupt things a little bit. But we have virtually total control of the Hormuz Strait, and in fact, in the last three days, more oil has come out of the Hormuz Strait than at any time in the history of the Hormuz Strait,” he said.

During the UN General Assembly in New York last week, Trump publicly rejected Tehran’s latest proposal to restore normal maritime traffic through Hormuz within a week if the US stopped its naval blockade, eased oil sanctions, and released frozen assets – ahead of potential talks on its nuclear programme.

Washington reinstated its blockade of Iranian ports in July after the earlier US-Iran Memorandum of Understanding broke down.
