The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) is calling on the National Executive Council of the union to declare an immediate nationwide strike over promotion grievances, according to a statement on Tuesday.
Comrade David Wislon, President of NAGRAT, signed the statement, which highlighted that the government has failed to resolve members’ grievances despite repeated assurances.
Among the unresolved issues are failure to place successful candidates in the 2025 promotion examination onto their correct rank and salary scale, non-payment of bona fide entitlements, and disregard for the Sector Minister’s directives.
“We write on behalf of aggrieved teachers and members of NAGRAT to draw your urgent attention to the mounting frustration among teachers nationwide following the validation exercise conducted this month and to formally call on the National Executive Council to declare an immediate nationwide strike, commencing 22nd September, 2026, unless decisive action is taken,” read the statement.
According to NAGRAT, the persistent failures, despite the good-faith engagement by the leadership of the association, have pushed the patience of their members to their limit.
The statement further indicated that teachers across the country are increasingly agitated and expressed fear without swift and visible action from the National Executive Council; members may take independent action that could prove difficult to control.
NAGRAT is therefore urging the National President and the Executive Council to immediately engage the Controller and Accountant General Department (CAGD) and the Ministry of Education to demand full and correct placement of all validated 2025 promotion candidates and secure a firm time-bound commitment for the payment of outstanding entitlements.
The rest are to hold the relevant government agencies accountable for implementing the Sector Minister’s directives and formally consider and communicate a nationwide strike directive if these demands are not met with immediate and verifiable action. Enditem
