The national youth wing of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) will hit the streets this morning to demand accountability from the government over alleged corruption, lack of transparency and what it describes as unfulfilled campaign promises.
The protest, dubbed the “Yɛgyɛyɛ Sika” demo, is expected to bring together party members and supporters, particularly young people, to raise concerns about the management of public funds and other national issues.
A major focus of the demonstration is the government’s recent evacuation of Ghanaian nationals from South Africa, with the organisers demanding a detailed account of the funds reportedly allocated for the operation.
The NPP youth wing is seeking clarification on the reported GH¢49.7 million expenditure and has called on Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa to account for the money.
Speaking to Accra-based Citi News ahead of the protest, NPP Volta Regional Youth Organiser Emmanuel Senyo Amekplenu urged young Ghanaians to join the demonstration, arguing that citizens must demand answers when questions arise over the use of public funds.
“If it is your money, you will not allow that to happen. If it is your company, you will not allow that to happen to your company and so for that reason, we, as a responsible Minority, the youth wing of the New Patriotic Party is leading the charge for the honourable Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa to render account to the Ghanaian people,” he said.
Amekplenu also questioned whether there had been errors in the accounting of the reported expenditure.
“The GH¢49.7 million that was given to Ablakwa, we want to know the true status of that money. Was there any error of transposition? Was there any accounting error in the course of balancing the account? We want to know,” he added.
The demonstration forms part of the opposition party’s efforts to press the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration to provide explanations on issues concerning public spending and the management of state resources. Enditem
