NPP petitions diplomatic community over political persecutions

The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Tuesday petitioned the diplomatic community in Ghana over what it describes as political persecution, suppression of dissent, and democratic backsliding under the administration of President John Dramani Mahama.

According to the petition, signed by NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong and Minority Leader Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, the party alleges that state institutions are being used against opposition figures, journalists, activists, and social media commentators critical of the government.

The petition was presented to Imane Ouaadil, the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps in Ghana, by Jerry Ahmed Shaib.

The NPP urged diplomats and international human rights organisations to monitor Ghana’s democratic environment and speak out on issues relating to freedom of expression, judicial independence, due process, and political tolerance.

The party also cited alleged politically motivated arrests and prosecutions involving some of its members, including Bono Regional Chairman Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC as examples of intimidation against opposition voices.

In response to the developments, some NPP officials have warned of heightened political tension if what they call harassment of opposition members continues. Enditem
