Polish riot cops swooped on the Constitutional Court in Warsaw – as PM Donald Tusk stood accused of an ‘attempted coup’ on Friday.
Footage shows police in full riot gear on one side and protesters on the other side of barred gates.
Tusk’s administration had been attempting to take power from the court’s judges – appointed by the previous PiS Law and Justice Party – in a long-standing dispute.
The court’s social media claimed there had been a ‘coup d’etat’. Media reports suggested there had been an attempt to suspend the tribunal’s president Bogdan Święczkowski and deputy president, Bartłomiej Sochański.
Polish President Karol Nawrocki cut short his Senegal trip to return to Warsaw.
“At a moment like this, the president must be in Poland. I am cutting short my flight to Senegal. I am returning,” he said.
Tusk himself posted: “Restoring the rule of law is our duty. After years of lawlessness, it is a difficult process, sometimes painful and requires decisive action. There is no other way.”
