President Mahama orders 2-day mass cleaning in 7 flood-hit regions

Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama has ordered two days of mass cleaning in the seven regions devastated by recent floods in the country, according to a release issued by the presidency on Monday.

The release said the exercise, scheduled for this Friday and Saturday, would involve security services and local government employees on the first day, and be joined by the general public in each affected region on the last day.

The critical nationwide program aims to deploy the synergy of the entire population to clean up communities, secure the environment, and safeguard lives across the country.

During the two days, attention will be focused on desilting choked drains to ensure uninterrupted water flow ahead of expected heavy rains; sweeping and collecting sand, weeds, and debris from major roads, streets, and highways; as well as cleaning up spaces, including markets, transport terminals, recreational centers, and communal waste collection points, said the release.

“This two-day exercise is a critical intervention and a vital wake-up call for the nation. For far too long, indiscriminate littering and plastic pollution have clogged our drainage systems, contributing to devastating preventable floods that destroy livelihoods and claim precious Ghanaian lives,” the release noted.  Enditem
