Tema microlight aircraft crash report set for May 29

By Francis Kobena Tandoh

The final report into the fatal Tema microlight aircraft crash is expected to be released on May 29, 2026, according to aviation authorities overseeing the investigation.

The Aircraft Accident and Incident Investigation and Prevention Bureau announced it has completed the preliminary phase of the probe and was awaiting critical inputs, including autopsy findings to determine the exact causes and contributory factors to the incident.

The Commissioner of AIB Ghana, John Wumborti explained that the update was issued in line with both national and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) requirements.

“This is not the final report. We are satisfying the requirement of our law that says after 30 days, if the final report is not ready, we should make the progress known to the public,” said Wumborti at a press conference on Friday.

He explained the rationale behind the investigation is not intended to apportion blame but to identify lessons and propose safety recommendations to prevent a recurrence.

The Investigator-in-Charge, Captain Paul Forjoe, said a formal team comprising five investigators and three observers have been constituted with additional support from the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), which assigned two focal persons to assist.

Italy, the manufacturing country of the microlight aircraft, has also designated an accredited representative and an advisor to participate in the investigation.

The crash occurred on March 16, 2026, when a microlight aircraft traveling from Ho to Accra went down at Tema Community One, killing the two people on board.

Investigators have since been examining debris, flight details, and possible technical or operational causes. The final report is expected to outline the probable cause of the accident and any safety recommendations. Enditem
