The Methodist Basic School “B” in Agona Swedru in the Central Region has been a major target for thieves, and for the past four years, many items belonging to the school had been stolen.
Narrating their ordeal to the media, the Headteacher of the school, Madam Nana Efua Asaaba, said the school has not known peace for the past four years, as thieves have broken into their offices and science and computer labs, making away with electrical cables as well as cables that power the air conditioner of the computer lab.
She further revealed that during one of such instances, the thieves broke through the ceiling of the computer lab and made away with laptops that had been donated by some old students of the school.
As an old student of the school herself, the Headteacher Nana Efua Asaaba hinted that her office was once also broken into through one of the windows, forcing her to close that section of the window permanently.
She said there was another attempt at the science lab, but the burglar-proof windows prevented it.
She noted that the situation has compelled the school to employ the services of a night watchman but pointed out that that has only reduced the incidents because of the size and locations of the facilities, as, according to her, some of the classrooms have been turned into “brothels” by these unidentified people during the night.
She disclosed that she has informed the Municipal Education Directorate of the problems facing the school but stressed nothing has been done about the problem to date.
She again hinted that despite this challenge, the school has limited furniture for both teaching staff and students to meet its increasing enrollment.
She, however, commended the old students for always coming to the aid of the school, revealing that she even had to furnish her office with her own resources.
She has therefore appealed to the relevant authorities, including the Municipal Assembly and the GES, as well as benevolent organizations and individuals to help provide metal doors to secure all the classrooms to save the school from further invasion by thieves. Enditem
