The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), together with the Commercial Transport Operators of Ghana, has announced a 20 percent increase in public transport fares nationwide, effective Tuesday, June 2, 2026, the unions said in a statement on Saturday.
According to the transport operators, the increase has been driven by rising fuel prices, higher costs of vehicle maintenance and spare parts such as tyres, batteries, and engine oil.
The upward adjustment in fares, the driver unions stated will affect “trotros,” intercity buses, and shared taxis across the country.
To ensure a seamless rollout of the new fares, the operators said updated fare charts would be displayed at lorry stations across the country ahead of the implementation date, urging customers to verify the approved fares at their respective stations and pay only the stipulated amounts.
“We understand the burden any fare adjustment places on commuters. This decision was taken only after all other options were exhausted.
The operators also cautioned drivers and transport mates against charging fares beyond the approved 20 percent increment, stressing that strict enforcement measures would be implemented to ensure compliance.
“Our task force, working with Police MTTD, will monitor compliance at major stations. Anyone found overcharging will face sanctions,” the statement added.
The transport unions acknowledged the burden on commuters but appealed for public understanding, stating that the decision was taken after other options had been exhausted. Enditem
