As part of activities for the 2026 World Press Freedom Day, the United Kingdom (UK)-Ghana Chamber of Commerce (UKCC) joined stakeholders in Ghana’s media and business space to commemorate the day with an industrial tour of Blue Skies Products Ghana Limited at Dobro, near Nsawam in the Eastern Region.

The visit, organized in collaboration with partners including the the Institute of Financial and Economic Journalists (IFEJ), the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), and the UKCC, formed part of activities marking this year’s celebration, highlighting the role of journalism in promoting transparency and economic development to engender peace in the world.

Head of Corporate Affairs and Foundation at Blue Skies Products (Ghana) Limited, Mr. Alistair Djimatey, has called on the Ghanaian media to be more intentional in spotlighting responsible businesses that are contributing meaningfully to national development.

Speaking on the WPFD theme, “Shaping a World at Peace”, Djimatey remarked that “Too often, the media narrative focuses on what is going wrong. But there are many businesses doing the right things – creating jobs, supporting communities, and maintaining high standards.  These are the stories that also deserve to be told.”

He noted that Blue Skies’ operations in Ghana reflect the WPFD theme through their deliberate commitment to supporting livelihoods and contributing to the country’s growth.

Balanced reporting, therefore, would not only strengthen public trust but also encourage more companies to adopt ethical and sustainable practices to shape a world at peace.

Communications Officer for the UK-Ghana Chamber of Commerce, Joycelyn Ahiable, emphasized that the Chamber, as part of activities to celebrate World Press Freedom Day, pays a visit to one of their member companies with journalists to understand their business, challenges, and opportunities.

She stressed that the theme of the 2026 World Press Freedom Day is apt, as journalists can use their various platforms to promote global peace.

Suleiman Mustapha, GJA’s National Organising Secretary, assured Blue Skies of the associations support.

“We will stand by you at all times and make sure that we help you in your advocacy to create an enabling business environment,” he said, acknowledging that without responsible businesses like Blue Skies, employment levels would be more acute than they already are, and the government will lose out on taxes from such establishments.

The Acting President of IFEJ, Roger Agana, added, “As financial and economic journalists, we see it as our responsibility to amplify businesses that are creating value locally and operating transparently. Blue Skies is a strong example of that.”

As part of the visit, management of the company took journalists round Blue Skies’ production facilities to gain first-hand insight into agro-processing and export operations.

The engagement aimed to strengthen media understanding of value chains, particularly in Ghana’s agribusiness sector.

It also created a platform for interaction between journalists and industry players, reinforcing the importance of accurate economic reporting.

The initiative also underscores IFEJ’s mandate to deepen financial and economic journalism in Ghana by exposing journalists to real-sector operations. Such field visits help reporters better interpret complex business issues for the public.

Blue Skies, founded in 1997, has employed at least 3,400 locals within the Dobro and its environs, near Nsawam in the Akuapem South Municipality of the Eastern Region.

It specializes in fresh-cut fruit and juice and supplies its products to Europe all the time.

The company has other establishments in Ivory Coast, Senegal, Egypt, South Africa, and Brazil.

World Press Freedom Day, marked annually on May 3, celebrates press freedom and highlights challenges facing journalists globally.

The 2026 global theme is “Shaping a future at peace: Promoting press freedom for human rights, development, and security.”

It focuses on safeguarding journalism and strengthening information ecosystems amid evolving technological and democratic pressures.

In Ghana, the day is typically observed with forums, training sessions, and field activities like the Blue Skies tour, emphasizing the link between a free press, economic accountability, and national development. Enditem
