Volodymyr Zelensky admitted he was ‘afraid’ when asked about the UK’s change in prime minister, as he spoke with outgoing leader Keir Starmer in Kiev on Thursday.
“President Zelensky – Prime Minister Starmer, and President Macron have been two of Ukraine’s greatest allies. Prime Minister Starmer is leaving office next week, President Macron is leaving office next year. How concerned are you about their departure in the context of Ukraine, and what is your message to the successor of Prime Minister Starmer in Britain,” he was asked.
Starmer began: ” I am very confident in saying that this commitment and support of the UK for Ukraine will remain unwavering. We will stand by you, Volodymyr, and the Ukrainian people for as long as necessary, and long after that.”
However, Zelensky added: “when you ask, what about us, of course, I am concerned about changes, of course, I am afraid because we are at war every day. “I hope that we never lose strong relations with the United Kingdom during and after the war. Thank you very much.”
Starmer has overseen £3.75bn in spending on Ukraine this year alone, and on Thursday confirmed another €300 million for Swedish-made fighter jets – with Zelensky unsurprisingly delighted to see him.
The spending surge has seen much criticism in the UK, following revelations of a huge multi-billion-pound black hole in the country’s own defence budget.
The UK leader announced he was stepping down last month, following a long string of scandals and rows, including domestic u-turns, his former US ambassador’s links to the late paedophile billionaire Jeffrey Epstein, claims of ‘two-tier policing’ and migration protests.
