UTAG issues June 30 deadline to govt to resolve grievances

The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has issued a June 30 deadline to the government to resolve several critical welfare and condition-of-service grievances affecting members, according to a statement over the weekend.

The decision was taken by the National Executive Council of the association during a statutory quarterly meeting on June 18, 2026, in Ho, the capital of the Volta Region.

According to the statement, the ultimatum follows deep frustration over repeated government delays that UTAG argues undermine the collective bargaining process.

The association warned it will initiate constitutional consultations within five working days to secure mandates for a nationwide strike if the government fails to take immediate action by the deadline.

“The National Executive Council (NEC) of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has given the government until 30th June, 2026, to resolve a range of outstanding conditions-of-service and welfare matters affecting members across Ghana’s public universities,” read the statement.

Among the issues being contested by the association include failure by the government to sign their interim salary adjustment agreement and challenges relating to post-retirement contract renewals and academic staff rollover.

The rest are online teaching support allowances, as well as salary arrears due to some staff of UniMAC, promotion arrears due qualified staff in several public universities, and the delay in processing and payment of the 2026 book and research allowance contrary to established practice. Enditem
