‘We are not taking any chances’ – Bunia airport reopens amid strict Ebola controls as epidemic fight gains traction

Bunia Airport in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo has reopened after an easing in the Ebola epidemiological situation, with authorities maintaining strict health screening measures despite the relaxing of restrictions.

Footage shows Ebola awareness banners displayed at the airport, alongside disinfection and hygiene control points set up for passengers and staff.

Officials said the reopening comes with reinforced preventive systems, including temperature screening, handwashing stations, controlled passenger flow and isolation procedures for suspected cases.

“We are working tirelessly because the airport will be reopening soon,” said Aime Prospere Katangu, head of the hygiene post at Bunia City border.

“We are not going to take any chances with the epidemic because it kills many people,” he added, stressing that any passenger with a fever above 38 degrees Celsius would be prevented from travelling and isolated for medical assessment.

Authorities said passenger processing has been redesigned to separate arrivals and departures, while digital registration systems and QR-code health forms have replaced paper-based checks.

Local businesses welcomed the reopening after weeks of disruption caused by the closure.

“I was very upset when the airport closure was announced because that is where I earn my living,” said airline agent Benjamin Kalala, adding that he was relieved to see activity returning.

Mobile phone reseller Shakira Muyisa said the closure had significantly affected local income, but stressed the importance of continuing preventive measures to avoid renewed transmission.

The reopening comes as health authorities continue to monitor Ebola risks in Ituri province. According to the Democratic Republic of Congo Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization (WHO), the situation in eastern DR Congo remains under enhanced surveillance.
