Thousands of supporters of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) poured onto the streets of Accra on Thursday to demonstrate against the government over what the party describes as arbitrary arrests and harassment as well as selective justice.
The demonstration, the first major one this year, dubbed “Democracy Under Attack” demonstration, drew large crowds across key parts of the Ghanaian capital.
The protesters, dressed predominantly in red and black, marched through central Accra to present petitions to the Supreme Court and the Presidency at the Jubilee House.
According to the party, the demonstration was intended to raise concerns over what it described as selective justice, due process, institutional independence, and the state of Ghana’s constitutional democracy.
The demonstration is one of the largest opposition protests held in Accra this year and drew party leaders, supporters, and members of allied political groups. Enditem
