President John Dramani Mahama says the government is constructing 16 new Senior High Schools (SHSs) across the country as part of efforts to end the double-track system in Ghana’s second-cycle institutions.
According to him, the construction forms part of a programme being financed through a newly approved US$300 million World Bank facility to expand infrastructure and improve access to quality secondary education.
President Mahama made the disclosure during an inspection of ongoing Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) projects at Han Senior High School as part of his “Resetting Ghana” tour in the Upper West Region.
He emphasized that the government remains committed to creating adequate classroom, accommodation and other facilities to support the Free SHS programme.
“Under that project, we’re building 16 brand-new secondary schools so that we can ease the congestion in the existing schools,” said President Mahama.
According to him, completing the new schools and expanding existing infrastructure will provide sufficient space to accommodate students without relying on the double-track arrangement.
The double-track system was introduced under the Free SHS programme to enable schools with limited infrastructure to admit more students by operating separate academic tracks.
Mahama said the government’s investment in new SHSs is therefore critical to achieving a single-track system, while ensuring that all eligible Ghanaian students continue to have access to secondary education. Enditem
